Catskill Mountain Area
The Catskill Mountain is located in New York State south of Albany and northwest of New York City. The Mountains are located in the region of the Hudson Valley and have an elevation of 4,154 feet. The Catskill Mountains provide the perfect environment for outdoor activities such as hiking and camping that attract visitors all year round.
The Catskill Mountains have long history of rich tradition. According to reports it is indicated that the Catskill Mountains began existence 350 million years ago. It is believed that, 200 hundred million years ago, streams formed because of a continental drift. The drift caused a plateau which created streams to form in gaps and valleys. This process led to the Catskill Mountains. During the beginning of history it has been noted that the Mohican and Munsee Native American tribes occupied the Catskills.
Currently in today's era the Catskill Mountains have become a popular vacation spot for travelers. The Mountains have much tradition and history which interests tourists. In 1969 the original Woodstock Music Festival was performed in Bethel, New York, which is considered in the Catskills. The Concert was created for three Days of Peace and Music in which over 500,000 attended the weekend event. The event has now been created into the Bethel Woods Center for the Arts. The center was created as a memorabilia for those who attended the original Woodstock in 1969. The Center is a performing arts area and museum that celebrates the legacy of Woodstock.
The Catskill also is an attractive area for campers and hikers. A main attraction for hikers and campers in Hunter Mountain. This mountain has many different trails in which campers and hikers use. The area also has activities such as fly fishing, cultural festivals, golf and zip line tours.
The Catskills also feature top rated wineries in the area. Shawagunk Wine Trail is an area in which
11 family owned wineries are located along an 80-mile route. Other attractions include casino’s, raceway’s and haunted houses.
