How to Fold a Map

( Back to Tips & Hints )

Those USGS Topo Maps are great when it comes to topographic detail, but are a pain in the neck to carry in the backcountry ... unless they're folded right. The following steps will help you fold your maps into an accordian shape, so you can see any part of the map without having to unfold the whole thing. To help make them last longer, fold them first, then unfold and coat with a map sealant (like 'Mapcoat') which waterproofs and protects plain paper maps. Always keep them in a resealable plastic bag.

First fold map horizontally, crease, and unfold. Next, fold map in half vertically, crease, and unfold.
