Trailbuilding News

Weather was not with us this past weekend, so we will continue working on the Stillman Trail bridge/stairs project with the same projects: shaping the rock for the staircase piers and drilling holes in the rock to place the pins used to hold the wood piers to the rock.

Experience with the rock saw and drill would be greatly appreciated. If you have a climbing harness, several locking carabineers and some webbing to tie in with, they will be useful.

There are also tasks that don't involved blades and bits moving at high RPMs. The bridge could use some decorative touches (wood-working) and there are a few rock steps. We've got a crib wall begging to be built. All are welcome!

If you can come, please let me know which project you are interested in so that I can bring the appropriate tools.

Please bring gloves, plenty of water and lunch. Heavy boots are a must.

We will meet at 9:30 in the Mountain Road parking lot for Storm King State Park. Please let me know if you need directions.

If you can join us, please let me know via email by Thursday evening.

I hope to see you soon!

Denise

We need to plan for the number of tools required.

New Trail Crew Forming for the West Hudson North Trails:
The Erosion Control Workshop is a first step in the start-up of a new West Hudson North Trails (WHN) crew to focus on project work in Minnewaska, Schunemunk and Storm King State Parks, and Black Rock Forest. For a number of years, these areas have received little attention beyond what the maintainers have been able to accomplish alone because there has not been a crew of folks from the area to take on the larger projects. So far, we have a Crew Chief (Denise Vitale), one Crew Leader (Dave Webber) and a schedule of 7 work trips for the summer and fall.

Learn the Skills to Make a Difference:
Since this is a new team, we are providing the unique opportunity to learn the skills of trail building, relocation, restoration and erosion control, while also tackling specific sites that are in need of our attention. Each work trip will consist of instruction for those who want it, as well as hands-on practice to accomplish the work needed on the section of trail.

The trail crews I've worked on develop a great sense of camaraderie while also doing something that provides a great sense of accomplishment. The work isn't for everyone. You get dirty and work hard. But for those who love the smell of the earth and are looking to give back to the trails that offer so much to us, this is a wonderful opportunity. Please come join us.

Kind regards,
Denise Vitale
